Vitamin D3 is often called the sunshine vitamin. When exposed to the sun, for example when walking, the UVB rays that send the sun’s rays to us combine with cholesterol in the skin cells. Thanks to this, energy is produced from which our body produces this vitamin. Usually, it is possible in the period from spring to autumn. For our body to produce vitamin D3, the sun must fall on our bare skin for the right amount of time.



Hardly anyone realizes that vitamin D is not really a vitamin, but a hormone because it can be produced by the human body. This is due to the conversion of cholesterol which occurs under the influence of solar radiation through the human skin.

Additionally, due to the influence of vitamin D on the metabolism of such minerals as, for example, calcium – involved in the thyroid-dependent calcium-phosphate metabolism – it is impossible not to associate vitamin D concentration with the possibilities of the thyroid gland.



Vitamin D and hypothyroidism

It has been shown that vitamin D deficiency in the body may predispose women, in particular, to the development of hypothyroidism. Studies have confirmed that patients with hypothyroidism are also characterized by suboptimal vitamin D concentration in the body.



Hashimoto’s and vitamin D.

Vitamin D’s protective effect is important in the context of autoimmune diseases, including psoriasis, but also Hashimoto’s disease, which affects the thyroid gland and develops most often as the next stage of hypothyroidism. Low levels of vitamin D in the body lead to a deterioration of the body’s immune capacity, and as a result, immune cells may attack the body’s own cells. If the thyroid cells are attacked, it is known as Hashimoto’s disease. It has been shown that vitamin D supplementation after the diagnosis of this disease can reduce symptoms and improve the well-being of patients, especially patients because women suffer from Hashimoto’s disease more often than men.
